I was very sick after thanksgiving it was not because I over ate, it was what I ate! High carbs! Never again. Before my low carb lifestyle I always had stomach problems. Yeah right! How many times have we talked ourselves out of doing something that would have improved our lives? I once wanted to become a currency trader. Your friends are rooting for you! Too fail! Not all of them but most. You see most of your friends are living afraid. They are afraid of change, change in their home , change at work, change with their friends. They think they can control things by them not changing. Change is inevitable. This is their mantra, their thinking “What are you doing! Everything is ok now why do you want to change!”. “Your messing everything up” . So when you fail everything stays the same for them. If you lose weight, they want you to gain it back. You see when you change, you force them to look at themselves. You have done what they secretly would like to do! I feel younger and better than I ever had in a long time. They did not let you down, they let themselves down a long time ago. They are your friends because you accept them as they are fat, skinny, rich, poor. A lot of your friends have tried different things in their lives and have failed they look at others and ask themselves “why did they make it and not me.” So if they ever try something new which is unlikely, because they think their best days are behind them . We are always doing things that are either getting us closer to our goals or further away from our goals. Eating too much carbs is getting us away from our goals. We need something that will remind us that we are moving further away from our goals. Get a red marker. On the palm of your dominant hand draw a big red circle. When you see that red circle it means “Stop!” This is what I say to myself “ Juan, this is the kind of thinking that made me fat, what areyou thinking or are you!” If it sounds kind of harsh it is, I am fighting for my life. Try bandages on your finger tips if you like for an even stronger reminder throughout the day( If someone asks you about the bandages just tell them you smashed your hand). When you are at McDonald’s getting your burger without the bun and you are temped to eat that apple pie you bought see the red dot or bandages and mentality think “stop!” Say, “(your name) this is the kind of thinking that made me fat, what are you thinking or are you!’ then open the window and throw it out hopefully it won’t go into the next car by you. Stopping yourself gets you off automatic pilot. It helps you make conscious choices, choices that are consistent with your goals. It even works with other habits you want to change like smoking, spending too much, etc. Eating too much carbs is a habit too, just like smoking, overspending, underearning. Did you get enough of the most important nutrient today? I find that the more water I drink the more weight I lose and the more consistent my weight loss is. Since the human body is composed of over 60-75% water (depending on what your source is) it needs enough water to be in peak performance. I know for my body the less water I drink the slower my weight loss is or it comes to a stand still. Thirst means that you are already dehydrated. Being on a low carb diet has a diuretic effect so you need to replace the water you lose or risk dehydration. Water also takes out the toxins in our systems. I am. I eat socially. When I get together with friends, even if it is for coffee I want to eat something. Not because I am hungry, I do it to be social. Friends invite me over and they are cooking dinner, I eat to be social. I am not hungry. I think it also has a lot to do with boredom eating when you are not hungry. What about watching a good movie at home I bet you eat even when you are not hungry. They are all triggers, all these situations trigger my “start to eat routine”. It was to my surprise that I was a social eater. I realize that whenever my friend and mentor GBG Trainer Roy Clinkscales and I would get together for our master mind meetings at IHOP. I would feel very uncomfortable not eating anything, somethings I would think to myself “why am I ordering food when I am not hungry?” I could have just had something to drink. I realized just as there are social drinkers there are also social eaters, like myself. Thats not good eating when you are not hungry. On a low carb diet I am not hungry. So I thought what to do? Then I thought, vegetables! vegetables to the rescue ( no potatoes!)! So now when my friends invite me over and they are eating, I eat only the vegetables. I lie, I mean I become a vegetarian for a few hours when I am with them. ” Oh, I am just trying a vegetarian lifestyle to see how I like it” when they ask about my new eating habits. I could do the same thing at the coffee shop and order a vegetable plate while I am their and have something to munch on. Same thing with a movie at home a vegetable plate to go with the movie. If I am bored I can snack on vegetables! I think maybe I am a combination of the social/boredom eater but I have a strategy for both! If you are not sure if a low carb diet is for you than change your diet a little to change a lot. Maybe the first week you can try drinking at least 64 oz of water a day and add GBG’S 10 in one liquid vitamin supplements. Relapse, it happens and is actually a part of the process of change. Until the new habit is created, and replaces the old habit relapsing will occur. Don’t give up or let it discourage you, know when you are most likely to relapse using the “relapse zones”. Look at this scale and determine how you feel using zero meaning you feel down and out and 10 meaning you feel on top of the world. Right now how do you feel on this scale?
Low esteem/stressed zone (0-1-2-3)-4-5-6-(7-8-9-10) High esteem/excited zone
Zero through 3 is when you are feeling down and out, you don’t care or are stressed about a situation. In this zone it is very easy to relapse with your low carb diet. But when you “know” you are in this zone you call tell yourself that this too shall pass and that you are just in a low mood. Tell yourself that this is not the time to deviate from your low carb diet and you will wait until you get into the “safe zone” to change anything. Don’t make any decisions you don’t have too when you are in the stressed zone, they will probably be ones that you regret later. How many times have you been in a stressful situation and did or say things you regretted later on.
Seven through 10 is the zone where you are feeling great, lost a lot of weight and feel on top of the world. In this zone it is also easy to relapse with your low carb diet, in this zone comes the “this won’t hurt me, I have been good and deserve this” mentality which spirals out of control. This is not the zone to change your eating habit either, just “knowing” that you are in this zone will help you not to relapse. Say ” I am just thinking this way because I am in a high zone”. This is the zone your friends must be when you ask them to “help you move” even though they will regret they made this decision when your move time comes, thats why you can’t find them on your move day!
4-5-6 is the “safe zone” here is where you want to reevaluate your weight loss decisions. The safe zone is where you are thinking rationally, most of the time you will make the correct choices when you are in this zone. In this zone you are calm, cool and collected and level-headed. Know what zone you are in with your low carb diet and get into the “safe zone” with your low carb diet. More to come…….
Don’t underestimate the value of a mentor helping you to achieve any goal faster and easier. I remember International Master Luismar Brito was my chess trainer and mentor, I became a chess expert myself with his mentorship. I have always used mentors, they have been where you want to go. I became an expert in trading currencies placing in the top ten in my first trading tournament by using a mentor. I became an expert in poker placing third in my first poker tournament by using a mentor. My first mentor in low carb was my best friend M.Pizano he was very successful with a low carb diet. You can find mentors in every field relating to any subject. I have a mentor I have not used but will in the near future, he is a gentleman. Mr. Perez who has years of experience buying real estate and is a millionaire. I took a job with him because I wanted to get to know him. My conversations with him are memorable he and his wife are first class, friendly people he would impart his knowledge to me freely. One thing about mentors, don’t waste their time. How do you get to meet a potential mentor? You invite them to lunch, dinner and ask them if they will be available because you are interested in the field they are in. It truly is and I can testify to that! I have been on so, so many diet plans and I failed big time on all of them. All of them left me hungry and angry. I have always loved the Terminator movies, especially the character Arnold played. When I look at the Terminator I often wonder how much we could accomplish if we took the same attitudes and actions and applied them to our own life. If you look at the Terminator he was focused! Nothing was going to get in his way of his goal. Not you, me or even himself. What if we did that with our goal, wishes or desires, not let anything get in the way not even ourselves. If we examine our own goals, whatever they might be, weight loss, producing more income, or whatever goal we want who or what stops us? Who “Terminates” our goals, wishes or desires? We can blame the sitting president, the economy,the weather, the people, but who actually stops us from reaching our goals? Who? You! Thats Who! We have found the enemy and it is us! Or something to that effect.I terminate my goals and so do you. You terminated your goals, wants and desires. Awareness helps us see where we sabotage our goals. How do we sabotage our goals? Just as the Terminator has his weapons, we have our own weapons of choice that we use against ourselves. Part two next.
When it comes to your low carb diet or weight loss what is your best case, so so, and worst case scenario a year from now? Today is October the 28 ,2009 a year from now would be October the 28,2010. For me my scenarios would be:
Best Case: Weigh 180 pounds a year from now.
So so Case: Weigh somewhere around 220 pounds a year from now.
Worst Case: Weigh at my starting weight of 266 or over a year from now.
The choice is up to me where I will be at October 28, 2010 and so it is for you also! You can decide now to be in the later part of 2010! So what are your low carb scenarios for 2010 the best, so so, and worst case. Or maybe don’t decide and just wake up a year from now hoping that something would have changed on its own. I ask that question because I wonder what people and myself sometimes are waiting for to accomplish or start on their goals in life. Are we just surviving until we die? I hope not. You can control one thing for sure and that is what you focus on. Where is your focus directed? If you are focused on being over weight than that is what you will get. If you are focused on being slimmer that is what you will get. When you focus on something that is where you guide your energies too, whether it be negative energy or positive energy. Lock on to your “why” for guaranteed weight loss success! Most people under estimate the power of their “why” or don’t have clarity of their “why”. The “why” you want to lose weight is far, far, more important than the “how”. You know how to lose weight by now, so if you know how why aren’t you doing it? Most likely your why is very weak or you have not crystalized the why you want to lose weight. Having a strong and clear why will get your over, around, through any obstacles you will encounter in your weight loss journey. So don’t have a weak why create a strong and powerful why by asking then clarifying your why by adding the phase “which means.” Please write them down and refer to them often. An example:
I want to weigh XXX lbs because ( your “why”) which means (clarify your why)
Let me fill in the blanks. I want to weigh 180 lbs because ( I do not want to have high blood pressure) which means ( I will not have to worry about my legs swelling up, or have to take clonidine, or other hypertension medicines like my family does or suffer unnecessarily.) Or, I want to weigh180 lbs. because ( I do not want to become diabetic) which means ( I don’t have health issues with my glucose numbers and I won’t have to take actos to regulate by blood sugar levels, I can avoid a host of other physical complications). Like an airplane that constantly has to adjust its course to its final destination we have to adjust our course of actions to our destination. Everyday use these 5 powerful words for weight loss, “Am I on course today?” Well are you? Your answer can only be yes or no. If the answer is yes than continue your course. If the answer is no than get back on course. Your final destination should be your weight loss goal. Realistically we will be off course sometimes, the thing is not to give up nobody is perfect so why demand perfection from ourselves? My weight loss goal is 180 pounds. So I am flight 180 (I am using moving towards motivation). Yes, we can use what made us fat to our advantage. One of the main things that made us fat was that we were consistent in eating the wrong kind of carbohydrates. We were eating the bad carbs, the ones that make us gain weight. “Consistent” meaning to adhere to the same principles or form or actions. So if we are consistent in eating the lowcarb foods that keeps our blood sugars level we will lose weight, If we are consistent with eating the high carb foods that raises our blood glucose levels we will gain weight. I was consistently very good at eating the high carbs foods every day, every hour and that consistency made me fatter and fatter. When I became “consistent” at eating low carb foods I consistently lost weight. We can use what made us fat to our advantage, we are very good at being consistent, just use it to eat low carb foods and watch the weight consistently fall off.
